Kayce Dutton’s Yellowstone spin-off gains momentum as the story expands, even without Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan at the helm.
Despite being a CBS series and the lack of Taylor Sheridan’s direct involvement, Luke Grimes’ Yellowstone spinoff, Y: Marshals, continues to gain momentum, with the latest update revealing that it will be produced by the same creative hub as Paramount’s hit Yellowstone universe.
This setup is the result of the recent merger of Skydance and Paramount, completed on August 7, as per Collider. The merger has overhauled the company into two major TV units: CBS Studios, which controls network programming, and Paramount TV Studios, responsible for streaming and prestige programs.
Y: Marshals will remain under the latter, which also produces hits like 1883, 1923, Tulsa King, and Reacher. Instead of following the typical CBS procedural formula, Kayce’s story will now be crafted with the layered storytelling and production values that have defined the Yellowstone brand, ensuring continuity in tone and quality, even without Sheridan at the helm.
What is Taylor Sheridan’s Role in the Yellowstone Spinoff, Y: Marshals
Taylor Sheridan has established a huge landmark TV franchise with Yellowstone, spawning multiple spin-offs within his expansive Western saga. Upcoming projects include a Beth and Rip-centered series, The Madison, 1944, and 6666.

However, in a first for the franchise, Sheridan is stepping back from creative control on the Kayce Dutton spin-off Y: Marshals. Centered on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), the series follows the character as he joins the U.S. Marshals Service following the events of Yellowstone.
Sheridan is credited only as an executive producer alongside David C. Glasser, Art Linson, John Linson, David Hutkin, Hudnut, Ron Burkle, Luke Grimes, and Bob Yari (IMDb). Instead, the series will be written and created by Spencer Hudnut, best known for the military drama SEAL Team.
CBS has ordered 13 episodes of the show, promising to explore Kayce’s next chapter with the mix of law enforcement drama and personal conflict that made him a fan favorite.
Y: Marshals Lands Logan Marshall-Green for Key Role
With the ever-expanding Yellowstone universe, its latest addition, Y: Marshals, has scored a significant casting win with Logan Marshall-Green, as per Variety. Known for his work in Prometheus, Upgrade, Alien, and The Invitation, the actor is cast in the role of Pete Calvin, a military comrade from Kayce Dutton’s past.

The official synopsis of the show reads, “With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
So far, Luke Grimes and Logan Marshall Green are the only confirmed cast members. Kelsey Asbille, who played Kayce’s wife in the original series, is also expected to reprise her role as Monica Dutton. However, there has not been an official confirmation about her return so far.
The filming for the show is set to start this summer, with the CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach promising the series will retain the look and feel of Yellowstone.
What do you think of Sheridan stepping back from the Kayce Dutton spin-off? Can CBS deliver the same cinematic grit without him?
Y: Marshals is set to premiere on CBS in the spring of 2026. Yellowstone is available to watch on Peacock in the USA.
