We now know pretty much all of the details in Joe Tate’s (Ned Porteous) plan to get a kidney from someone in Emmerdale.
This week, Joe told Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker) that he’s been diagnosed with AAT deficiency. He lives with chronic kidney disease as a result of the condition, and is trying to get a blood relative to donate an organ to him.
It’s all been quite confusing and hard to follow in some places, so let’s take a look back at the plot and hopefully give you all the answers you need.
What’s wrong with Joe Tate in Emmerdale?
Joe’s chronic kidney disease has developed because he has inherited the AAT deficiency.
It is diagnosed when someone lives with lower effective concentrations of AAT in their blood. AAT itself is an inhibitor that is transported to the lungs and produced in the liver.
It means someone with the diagnosis is at risk of developing conditions such as COPD or liver problems, or issues with their kidneys.
Who spiked Noah Dingle?
Joe and Doctor Crowley were responsible for spiking Noah (Jack Downham) with drugs in February. Crowley followed Joe’s idea, which was to get Noah on the operating table before even knowing if he was a match with his sibling.
He wasn’t, which meant Noah was let go. In his drugged haze, however, he stumbled in front of a limo that was being driven by Charity (Emma Atkins), which led to the vehicle crashing on an icy lake.
Who was blackmailing Manpreet?

In tonight’s episode, Joe found Billy (Jay Kontzle) on his tablet at Home Farm. He joked and said Billy needs to put a password on the device, because he snooped on there a few weeks ago.
Billy was horrified and immediately referenced the account he had been using to access Manpreet’s (Rebecca Sarker) private images online.
It was suggested that Joe knew more about Manpreet’s ordeal than he was letting on yesterday, when he found her at the Pavilion.

Manpreet had received a text from the culprit demanding she hands over £5k at that location, and initially thought it was Joe when he appeared.
Joe claimed he had simply taken a walk and bumped into Manpreet, and she believed him. He later encouraged Manpreet to open up about her ordeal, and seemingly put her mind at rest when he gave her another £5k to suit the ‘blackmailer’s’ latest demand.
Joe’s comments to Billy and then Crowley when he arrived practically confirmed that he had been blackmailing Manpreet after finding her profile through Billy’s tablet.
Why does Joe need Manpreet’s help?
Joe hopes that his uncle Caleb Miligan (William Ash) will be his donor, but isn’t going to ask for his help. Instead, he intends to test some of his blood to find out if he has inherited the AAT deficiency from Frank Tate like Joe, and to see if he’s a match.
Manpreet’s role in this plan involves her subtly getting her hands on a vial of Caleb’s blood to then give to Joe.
At first, she was reluctant to help him, but we saw tonight that she successfully performed a routine health check on Caleb, and now has what Joe needs.
