An unplanned pregnancy can be a tricky thing as it is, but for local Emmerdale resident Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), it couldn’t come at a worse time.
The village has been decimated by the devastation of the limo crash, which claimed the lives of Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi), Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough), and Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson).
Not to mention, there’s the little matter of Nate Robinson’s body floating beneath the lake, and the fact that a group of locals are covering up the murder of Anthony Fox.
The news of a new life coming into the chaos might ordinarily be a positive thing, but the dad is in no place to receive the good news – so how will he react?.
Aspiring doctor Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) is living with the trauma of having discovered that his mum had died after being stabbed by a broken glass stem in the crash while he was on shift.
The limo Leyla was travelling had careened off the road and into a frozen lake, with Suzy dying in the crash and Amy dying later in hospital after falling through the ice and suffering hypothermia.
Leyla succumbed to her injuries in the ambulance, with Jacob discovering this while on shift, working as a trainee doctor in A&E.
Prior to the huge incident, Sarah and Jacob had been enjoying a fledgling romance. It wasn’t without its ups and downs, but they soon managed to work out their differences and solidified their romance with a night together.
But now, in the wake of the loss of his mum, Jacob is in a bad place and a new relationship is the last thing on his mind.
Trying to cope with his grief, he begins burning the candle at both ends, which leads to him suffering a panic attack at work.
Jacob turns to drink to cope, and when he and his pal Rich are knocking them back at the Hide, Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor Draper) and Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) are left concerned.
Sarah is also concerned and tries to talk Jacob off the figurative ledge he’s standing on, but he bats her away like she’s nothing.
Sarah is stunned by his rejection and is despondent when she opens her bag and looks at a pregnancy test.
With Jacob trapped in the abyss of grief, Sarah is left feeling alone as she takes the pregnancy test while all the villagers gather ready for the funerals of their friends and relatives.
As the funeral gets underway, Sarah reads the test and is shocked to see it show a positive reading. How will broken Jacob react to learn he is becoming a dad?
