CORONATION Street star Shobna Gulati has revealed she is non-binary and has โfallen in loveโ.
Shobna, 58, best known for playing Sunita Alahan on theย ITVย soap for 12 years, spoke openly about their gender identity for the first time.
The actor also shared that she is currently in love but remain open toย datingย men or women in theย future.
In a conversation withย Kaye Adamsย on theย How to Be 60ย podcast, she revealed she has always felt this way but only recently found the right term to describe their identity.
Shobna said: โIโve become more happy describing myself as a person. What do people call it now? Non-binary. So, I suppose thatโs who I am.
โIโve never had a word for it, but Iโve learnt from our younger generation what that might look like in terms of a word, because I know what it feels like in terms of being me.โ
A non-binary person is someone who does not exclusively identify as male or female.
Their gender identity may be fluid, or she may feel a mix of both genders or neither.
Onย Instagram, Shobna lists their preferred pronouns as โshe/theyโ.
She continued in the interview: โAll the way through my life, Iโve never had the words for that, and Iโve never managed to explain that. I suppose my immediate family have not really thought about it.
โTheyโve just thought: โShobna is either extremely feminine or extremely masculine.โ
โBecause I was just accepted as a person who fell out of the tree and equally the person who put on all this makeup and did a dance.โ

Shobna shared that her understanding of being non-binary became clearer after a conversation with a sound engineer while working on a project together.
She added: โThe sound person said to me that they were non-binary, and I said: โWhat is that?โ So, then she explained, and I thought, โWell, I feel like that, but I didnโt ever have that vocabulary.โ
โThey said that they saw themselves as a person and that the gender โ the he or the she โ wasnโt important to who they are. And I thought: โThatโs all Iโve ever thought.โ
โAnd I think now Iโm free to say it out loud. I think people around me have accepted who I am for a long time without any explanation, but I suppose when Iโm asked now, Iโll say it.โ
Shobna, who first gained widespread recognition in the late 1990s for her role as Anita inย Dinnerladies, reflected on the pressure she faced to appear more traditionally feminine while growing up.

She explained: โMy father would say things like: โOh, you havenโt dressed up today,โ or โYou havenโt washed yourย hair,โ or โYourย hairย looks limp, you canโt go out like that.โ Iโd say: โWhy not?โ
โHeโd make comments along the wayโฆ โI walk like a boy.โ
โLots of people tell me I walk like a boy, and I do. I just donโt know quite where it all comes from; itโs just who I am, and Iโm happy in that now.โ
Shobna first arrived on the cobbles in 2001, playing Sunita, who eventually married Dev Alahan.
In her personal life, she married architect Anshu Srivastava in a Hindu ceremony at the age of 23.
Theirย marriageย lasted four years, and she became a single parent to son Akshay, now 30.
Shobna said balancing single parenthood with a high-profile acting career came at a cost.
Non-binary people identify outside the traditional gender binary, which can mean identifying as a mix of both genders, neither, or something else entirely.
This gender identity has been recognized more in recent years, with prominent figures and activists raising awareness.
In the UK, legal recognition of non-binary identities remains complex.
Currently, there are no formal legal recognitions for non-binary people in any jurisdiction of the United Kingdom.
However, non-binary status is recognized in the census of England and Wales, and the title โMxโ is accepted by government organizations and businesses as an alternative for non-binary individuals.
She told Kaye: โI did haveย relationships, but then they were very public.
โIt was sad for me because I didnโt feel that I got enough time to have a relationship and to have more children and have a private life because it was so un-private and so exposed.
โBut itโs done now, and I havenโt had any more children. I didnโt get that opportunity, which sometimes I feel sad about, or I didnโt meet the right people because of everything that was out there.โ
Now, Shobna has found love again, concluding: โI think Iโve loved this person all my life.โ However, she remains open toย datingย anyone, regardless of gender.
โThat is also something Iโm looking at โ what that means to me. So yes, I would go for a person absolutely, regardless of their gender.โ
