Peter Reckell returns as Bo Brady, and it’s more emotional than ever. The legendary soap star reconnects with his on-screen family, including his adult son Zack and new grandson Bo Weston. Can the Brady family heal as Bo faces a heartbreaking health crisis?
In a heartwarming return to Days of Our Lives, Peter Reckell, beloved for his iconic role as Bo Brady, has once again stepped into the heart of the Brady family drama. Earlier this year, Reckell reprised his role and shared the screen with several young actors, including Brandon Butler (who played his adult son, Zack) and Vincent Simard (who portrayed his grandson, Bo Weston). The connection was immediate, and Reckell has expressed how natural the experience felt, both as a father and a grandfather on screen.
Reckell’s reunion with Zack, who tragically died in 2006, was an emotional one. In an ethereal encounter before Bo awoke from his coma, Bo gets to spend time with a now-adult Zack at the Brady Pub. The chemistry between Reckell and Butler was undeniable. Reckell praised Butler’s performance, saying, “He was amazing,” noting that the young actor needed no direction, which made their scenes together effortless. “There was no adjusting to things. I didn’t have to [show him the ropes],” Reckell shared. “It felt so natural. It was perfect.”
While Zack’s storyline on Days may have ended with his death all those years ago, Reckell hopes that Butler will be brought back into the fold, either as Zack or another character in the future. “I hope we use him again as Zack,” Reckell mused. “Either that or he goes on to do another character on the show, because he was right on.”
Another highlight of Reckell’s return was interacting with his on-screen grandson, Bo Weston, played by Vincent Simard. Reckell admitted that portraying the role of a grandfather felt a bit surreal at first. “Trying to recognize that I’m old enough to be a grandfather!” he chuckled. But Simard’s performance quickly put those thoughts aside. “He was a great kid,” Reckell said. “He was so on and a feisty little guy.” Reckell credited Days casting directors for finding such perfect young actors for both roles, adding, “I’m really proud of our casting people.”
Peter Reckell’s long history with Days includes working alongside many child actors, and he’s always found it to be an enjoyable experience. “I don’t know why they say, ‘Never work with animals or children,'” Reckell mused. “Because I’ve always loved working with both of them.” He finds the unpredictability of working with kids exciting. “You never know what a kid’s going to do. Very often, they’re going to do something different when you’re taping. Also, helping them focus helps me focus.”
As a father himself, Reckell believes that working with children is a natural fit for him. “What I do for a living is a child’s game. It’s playing pretend,” he smiled. “So to play pretend with kids is just perfect.”
Reckell’s return to Days has not only been a reunion with his on-screen family but also a powerful reminder of the connections he’s built with his fans and fellow actors over the years. His authenticity, both as Bo Brady and as a person, continues to resonate with audiences, and his emotional scenes with his on-screen family have only deepened the bond with Days fans.
As Bo Brady faces a health crisis on the show, Reckell’s return couldn’t have been more timely, allowing fans to say goodbye to Bo in the most emotional and touching way. Whether Bo survives or not, Reckell’s portrayal of this beloved character is sure to leave a lasting impact on the soap opera world.
