As the rest of Walford is rocked by the grief of Martin Fowler’s (James Bye) death, the Mitchells are also in the midst of a painful aftermath, with Phil’s (Steve McFadden) desperate battle with mental health now out in the open.
For months, viewers have seen the increasingly self-isolated Phil grow more and more depressed, culminating in a suicide attempt in front of his shocked loved ones – Grant (Ross Kemp), Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley), and Linda Carter (Kellie Bright).
It came after Linda discovered goodbye notes, written by Phil after a series of psychosis episodes saw members of his family encourage him to take his own life in visions conjured by his agonised mind.
As Grant, Nigel and Linda arrived to find Phil with a gun, his desperate plight was laid bare as he tearfully made it clear he felt the world was a better place without him.
Grant was the most perplexed of all, having dismissed Nigel and Linda’s worries about Phil’s state of mind.
The stiff upper lip hardman and self proclaimed alpha male had little understanding of the mental health crisis Phil had found himself in.
Indeed, after the gun Phil had turned out to be empty – thanks not to Phil, but Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) – Grant stormed out, leaving his brother behind.
Nigel later plead with Grant to reach out to his brother and he has found himself under pressure to confront his actions.
He went to visit Phil, who was unforgiving and told him that he had no brother.
Things are starting to dawn on Grant but he remains defensive in upcoming episodes.
When he is once again challenged over his attitudes and accused of failing Phil, this time by Billy (Perry Fenwick), Grant steps up in anger, the threat of violence in the air.
As a face-off looks set to erupt, can things be calmed down? And will Grant start to start to show more understanding?
It’s not the only bombshell he will be hit with this week either. Nigel has been diagnosed with early onset dementia but has so far avoided confiding this in his friend.
However, when Grant overhears a conversation with Yolande (Angela Wynter), he demands answers.
Now knowing what Nigel is facing, Grant will present an offer – move away with him.
What will Nigel say?
