Coronation Street fans have said ‘it’s wild’ as Sydney Martin shared her ‘application’ for another role, if it were ever to arise.

The actress made her TV debut last year in the ITV soap, having bagged the role of Betsy Swain after previously auditioning for other roles in the programme.

Sydney, from Rossendale, was officially revealed as being Betsy Swain, the daughter of established character DS Lisa Swain, last summer after already popping up in the ITV soap, simply as Sabrina Adetiba’s mate.

Fans think Sydney would suit being in a Mamma Mia movie

She recently marked a whole year in the role and shared a sweet message on social media. In a photo shared to her Instagram page, Sydney could be seen beaming for the camera as she held onto a cake with a ‘1’ candle burning on the top.

Alongside the post, the 23-year-old gushed: “1 whole year of Betsy Swain. So incredibly lucky & grateful. I [love] my job.”

But Corrie fans haven’t been able to stop themselves from commenting on how Sydney could quite well fit in with the cast of the Mamma Mia movies.

In a recent TikTok video, the soap star was seen miming to a clip from the film, which had been remixed to include the hit Eurovision-winning track, Waterloo.

Alongside the post, in which she could be seen dancing on her bed while sporting a pair of light denim dungarees, Sydney wrote: “My application for mamma mia 3!” and the comments quickly came flooding in.

One said: “It’s actually WILD how much you look like Lily James.” Another commented: “You would actually suit a young young Donna or Sophie.” A third wrote: “You would be the perfect cast for mama Mia omg.”

A fourth posted: “let’s start a pertition for sydney to be in mamma mia.” Another gushed: “you and mamma mia are the perfect combo.” A fan also demanded: “SYDNEY IN MAMMA MIA YES PLEASE.” A seventh added: “Sophie’s daughter legit would be the best casting idea.”

It comes after Sydney was seen with her partner attending ABBA Voyage, a virtual concert residency by the Swedish pop group, back in June.

The concerts feature virtual avatars – dubbed ‘ABBAtars’ – depicting the group as they appeared in 1979 and use the original vocals recorded by the group, accompanied by a 10-piece live instrumental band on stage.

Taking to Instagram, Sydney shared pictures of herself and her boyfriend Jack Hainey smiling for the camera as they waited for the show to star just outside the main arena.

The soap star also shared other pictures from the fun night out which she captioned with a nod to ABBA, writing: “Does your mother know that you’re out?”

The comments quickly came flooding in and many couldn’t help but point out that Sydney would fit right in if a ‘young Sophie’ was needed for the upcoming return of the Mamma Mia movies.

Corrie co-star Vicky Myers, who plays on-screen mum DS Lisa Swain, said: “SOPHIE [crying emoji]. Can’t wait to hear all about it.” Lauren Bolton actress Cait Fitton commented: “Iconic,” alongside a string of love heart eyes emojis.

On the Mamma Mia theme, @samzreadsbooks posted: “Starting a petition for you to play young Sophie in the next Mamma Mia,” to which Sydney replied: “THE DREAM.”
