Coronation Street fans are in for a surprise as it’s been revealed that the show’s new on-screen couple, Gareth Pierce and James Cartwright, have a history that goes beyond Weatherfield! The actors, who play Todd Grimshaw and newcomer Theo Silverton, previously worked together on another popular soap.

Next week, viewers will see sparks fly when Theo, a scaffolder, arrives on the street and catches Todd’s attention. But this isn’t the first time Pierce and Cartwright have crossed paths. In a recent interview, Pierce shared that the pair worked together on The Archers, the long-running BBC Radio soap.

Pierce recalled their time in the studio, mentioning how they were part of the last group of actors recording before the pandemic lockdown halted production. “We were just firing through rewrites, trying to record as much as possible because everything was so uncertain,” he explained.

Interestingly, their professional connection goes even further back. Pierce revealed that he first met Cartwright about 13 years ago when Cartwright attended one of his father’s plays. Despite their previous work together, Pierce says they haven’t collaborated extensively—allowing them to bring fresh energy to their on-screen romance.

He praised his co-star, calling Cartwright a “lovely actor” who has “hit the ground running.” Their existing friendship has made filming smoother while still allowing room for authentic chemistry to develop between Todd and Theo.
