Kathleen Gati returns as Dr. Liesl Obrecht in General Hospital after almost a year, and it’s a reunion no one saw coming. Obrecht’s first move? Reconnecting with her ‘grandson’ Rocco and exploring deep family secrets. Will this lead to healing or more heartache?
Fans of General Hospital were in for a delightful surprise on Thursday, July 17, when Dr. Liesl Obrecht, played by the incredible Kathleen Gati, made her highly anticipated return to the show. Obrecht, who hasn’t graced our screens since December 2023, reappeared to reconnect with former ‘sorta grandson’ Rocco and her beloved niece, Nina (Cynthia Watros). The return was filled with intense emotions, making it one of the most memorable moments for GH fans.
Kathleen Gati, who has been working on various projects in Hollywood and Europe, expressed her joy about stepping back into Obrecht’s shoes. “Of all the roles in my 40-plus-year career, Obrecht remains my absolute favorite,” Gati said in an exclusive interview with Soap Opera Digest. Her character is an actor’s dream—complex, layered, and brimming with contradictions. She’s evil, funny, dark, playful, a mad scientist, a loving mother, and a woman who can speak multiple languages with an unforgettable accent. Gati admits, “I missed her tremendously and I am so grateful to return to her.”
The call to return to General Hospital came from the casting director, Mark Teschner, and it quickly led to a conversation with executive producer Frank Valentini. Gati was committed to a feature film at the time, but Valentini worked around her schedule, making sure that her return to the iconic soap was a reality. For Gati, this was a dream come true—coming back to a character that had been a part of her life for so long.
When Gati received the script for her return, it was like “Christmas” for her, she said. But stepping back into Obrecht’s mindset wasn’t as easy as flipping a switch. “I had to do a lot of rethinking, rehashing and also watched some old episodes of my work,” Gati explained. She spent time rediscovering the nuances of Obrecht’s voice, accent, and the complexities of her character. After a bit of trial and error, Gati found the perfect balance, and Obrecht’s voice came back naturally.
Obrecht’s return storyline is both heartwarming and emotional. Rocco, now a young man, reaches out to her after learning of his connection to her late daughter, Britt. This unexpected twist has brought up old memories of Obrecht’s past, including her controversial decision to steal Lulu and Dante’s embryo, resulting in the birth of Rocco. Gati reflects on this storyline with humor and fondness, recalling how Obrecht justified her actions, claiming she only wanted what was best for her daughter, Britt.
Obrecht’s reaction to Rocco is a mix of excitement and nervousness. After losing two children—Nathan and Britt—Obrecht is starved for family, and Rocco’s return is an opportunity to fill that void. There are layers of guilt, hope, and maternal instincts at play, and Gati perfectly portrays this emotional complexity. “It’s definitely a whirlwind of emotions for Obrecht,” Gati added.
One of the standout moments of her return was her reunion with co-stars Cynthia Watros, Finola Hughes (Anna), Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth), and Rick Hearst (Ric). For Gati, it felt like coming home. “It was so fantastic to be back on set with everyone again,” she shared. “The welcoming reception I received from the cast and crew was very heartwarming.”
Another unforgettable reunion was with Kelly Thiebaud, who portrayed Britt. Their bond on-screen as mother and daughter was incredibly special, and their real-life connection is just as strong. Gati was thrilled when she saw Kelly’s name on the call sheet. “We had a very emotional and heartfelt hug,” Gati recalled, remembering how painful it was to see Britt’s death scene two years ago. “Kelly had become like a real daughter to me,” she admitted.
As for Obrecht’s future on the show, Gati is excited to see where the storyline goes. Fans are eagerly awaiting to find out whether Kelly Thiebaud will return as Britt or a new character. If Britt comes back, it would be a shocking and emotional moment for Obrecht. Gati imagines the flood of emotions that would come with such a reunion—joy, anger, shock, and love all at once. If Thiebaud is playing a new character, Gati is equally curious to see how that will impact Obrecht’s journey.
Obrecht’s return has also brought her closer to a new “grandson,” Rocco, played by Finn Carr. Gati praised Carr for his professionalism and enthusiasm. “He’s a talented, sweet young man. A dream acting partner,” Gati said, emphasizing how well they worked together.
Obrecht’s return is a sign that her journey is far from over. With new family dynamics at play, the potential for drama is high, and Obrecht’s fierce love for her children—and the lengths she’ll go to protect them—will surely lead to even more unforgettable moments.
Will Obrecht find redemption and peace, or will she continue her chaotic path? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: her return has added an exciting new layer to General Hospital that fans can’t wait to watch unfold.
